Good cabling should remain understandable and serviceable years after installation. Plan the physical network before buying switches or adding devices.
1. Count systems, not only desks
Include computers, IP phones, printers, Wi-Fi access points, CCTV cameras, access control, attendance terminals and other Ethernet devices when planning outlet density.
2. Design the rack before pulling cables
Reserve rack space for patch panels, switches, cable management, routers, servers or NVRs where applicable. A rack should be easy to trace and service, not simply full.
3. Select cable category for the requirement
Cable type should match link speed, distance, environment, installation method and project specification. Avoid selecting a category only because its number is higher.
4. Check PoE requirements
Access points, cameras, phones and access-control devices may use PoE. Confirm per-port requirements and the total switch power budget before deployment.
5. Label and test every link
Use consistent outlet, patch-panel and cable labels. Testing appropriate to the agreed scope turns a cable installation into documented infrastructure.
6. Leave sensible expansion capacity
Spare rack space, patch-panel ports and switch capacity are cheaper during the initial project than rebuilding the network after the first expansion.
